Life and work

  1. 1962
Arrived at Sydney only months before J. R. B. Stewart's death (Feb 1962) and had to run the department; the Registrar told him that if he did not apply for the Chair he would be assumed not to want to stay.

  2. 1962
Raised with Eve Stewart's lawyer the purchase of Stewart's library and coin collection; he and a colleague recommended Sydney as the place for it.

  3. 1963–1965
Dispute with Eve Stewart over the Melbourne Cyprus Expedition (Karmi/Vasilia/Ayia Paraskevi) finds and records held at the Nicholson Museum: reluctant to cede control, he asked for Schaeffer's Vounous material back, and finds were sent to her in poorly packed cases in 1965 (four cases temporarily missing).

  4. 29 March 1965
Attended the Melbourne Cyprus Expedition committee, which agreed to sponsor Derek Howlett to work with Eve Stewart to mid-1966 and to contribute £2000 to a last excavation on Cyprus led by her.

  5. 1966
Opened the reorganised Nicholson Museum with a lecture on beauty for its own sake; Megaw later criticised his long reign for neglecting non-Greek, non-Roman objects.

  6. 1967–1975
Directed excavations at Zagora on Andros (Greece); founded the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens in 1981.
