The project
Building XVI, a monumental court-centred building with possible evidence for feasting, was one of two areas of work for the Kalavasos and Maroni Built Environments (KAMBE) Project at Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios; the other was the approach to the city's administrative core, monumentalized through a series of construction phases1. Kevin D. Fisher, Sturt W. Manning and Thomas M. Urban published the investigations of 2012–2016 in the American Journal of Archaeology. They sought to relate changes in Late Bronze Age Cyprus to the rise of the island's first cities, and collected high-resolution data on the site1. KAMBE also ran large-scale magnetic gradiometer reconnaissance and targeted ground-penetrating-radar surveys at Ayios Dhimitrios and the Maroni complex between 2011 and 20132. The authors' comparison of Ayios Dhimitrios with the Maroni complex concludes that the first Cypriot cities took divergent paths to becoming urban1.
