Troyes industrialist and numismatist whose Cypriot terracottas were catalogued by Froehner and sold in Paris in May 1891; pieces from his collection were in the Metropolitan Museum by 1928.

Biography

Julien Gréau, an industrialist and numismatist from Troyes, owned Cypriot terracottas that were sold in Paris from 11 to 16 May 1891 in a sale catalogued by Wilhelm Froehner3,4. He was born in Troyes on 27 August 1812 (an authority record gives 1810) and died at Nemours on 11 August 18951. Hellmann describes him as an industrialist who "never ceased buying and reselling all kinds of objects"3.

Froehner wrote the catalogue of the Cypriot terracottas on 7 to 10 September 1888 and received the vignettes on 26 March 1890; the catalogue appeared in 1891 as the third part of the Gréau collection3. A fragmentary terracotta diadem now in Budapest (No. 122) belonged to Gréau from 1867, then to Louis de Clercq, and was bought by the Budapest museum from Paul Arndt in 1914; it is also No. 533 of the 1891 sale catalogue, and no date is given for the transfer to De Clercq4. A Larnaca-fabric kourotrophos, Louvre AM 274, now at Cannes, is cited to lot 457 of the same sale5.

In 1928 Anderson Galleries sold duplicates on behalf of its trustees, among them Red Polished bowls "from the Cesnola and Julien Gréau Collections" and glass lots headed "from the Julien Gréau Collection"6.
