Life and work

    Cleaning the Street area of the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates for his 'final survey', first noted an inscribed paving-block (Mitford's inscription), which had doubtless been uncovered in 1947.

    Published The Architecture of the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates at Kourion, summarising the University of Pennsylvania Museum excavations (McFadden, aided by Bert Hodge Hill, 1934-1953).

    Mitford's Inscriptions of Kourion quotes Scranton's architectural reconstruction of the Temple of Apollo, the Kourion Gate and the South Building exedrae as the basis for restoring several building inscriptions.

    During new work on the Temple of Apollo, studied the fallen blocks on the north side and proposed a reconstruction of the north and west walls; they had fallen in a violent earthquake and stayed in situ. The Department of Antiquities undertook to rebuild the building.
