Collector

Baron Barracco

fl. 1891–1893 · Italy

Italian collector, active 1891–1893. Bought from Joly de Bammeville; acted for Wilhelm Froehner.

Life and work

  1. 7 September 1891
Froehner offered the Baron two small ancient heads, one from Mycenae and a 'Pallas' head from Cyprus (Froehner's journal as quoted by Hellmann). Hellmann finds no Cypriot Pallas in the Barracco catalogue (1973); two heads are listed as 'dono Froehner' (nos. 72 and 46, neither Cypriot), so she asks 'confusion, or resale?'.

  2. 15 June 1893
At the Joly de Bammeville sale (12-16 June 1893, experts Rollin-Feuardent, catalogue by Froehner) Froehner bought a Cypriot head for Barracco; it became no. 67 in the Museo Barracco catalogue, 'testa di sacerdote (?) coronato, arte cipriota del VI-V s. a. C.'.
