Antoinette J. Decaudin

fl. 1870–1993 · France

Louvre documentaliste who compiled the 1987 census of Cypriot antiquities in French provincial museums and catalogued the Lycklama collection at Cannes in 1993.

Biography

Antoinette J. Decaudin compiled the 1987 inventory of Cypriot antiquities in French public collections. Annie Caubet had begun gathering documentation on Cypriot loans to provincial museums in the Louvre's Oriental Antiquities department, and the census, in Anne-Elizabeth Dunn-Vaturi's words, "fut finalement confié quelques années plus tard à A. Decaudin"4. The result was Les antiquités chypriotes dans les collections publiques françaises (1987)2. It left out the Louvre, the Cabinet des médailles, the Paris-region collections and some provincial museums already assigned to others, Lille among them5. For Lyon she presented about forty ceramics, thirteen limestone sculptures and fourteen terracotta figurines, and for Laon her volume gave the first catalogue of a collection of more than a hundred objects5,6. Caubet cites it for the objects brought to the museum at Châteaudun by Alban Guillaume-Rey3.

The Cannes pieces were not in the census, having already been catalogued by her1. On 2 July 1990 François Nedellec, conservateur of the Musée de la Castre, authorised "Madame Antoinette J. Decaudin, documentaliste au Musée du Louvre" to publish her results. Chypre dans l'antiquité (1993) catalogues the Cypriot pieces of the collection of Tinco Martinus Lycklama a Nijeholt that were accessible in 1989, with Louvre loans1.

Marangou records that she told the biographers of Luigi Palma di Cesnola of a 73-page album of Golgoi photographs that Cesnola sent to Count Federico Sclopis di Salerano at the Turin Academy of Sciences on 12 September 18707.
