History

  1. 1841
The museum's Inventory X, in which the earliest Cypriot objects are registered, was opened in 1841 (to 1878).

  2. 19 May 1869
Pierre Martin-Rey, a former deputy, gave four objects said to come from Idalion (Dali), found in February 1857 by the crew of a Captain Sicard; registered as X 722. One (X 722-2, a head) is missing, and its number was later given, perhaps in error, to a terracotta head (cat. 75). Yon calls this the start of the Cypriot collection.

Lot E 366 acquired from Albert Sorlin-Dorigny, Constantinople: inventoried as 17 limestone and 30 terracotta statuettes plus three vases 'of Cyprus'. Yon counts 15 limestone statuettes, 21 or 22 terracottas and three Archaic vases as Cypriot; renumbered E 366-1 to 43. Some bear old 'coll. Lambert' labels of unclear meaning.
