André Dupont-Sommer
fl. 1969–1974 · France
French epigrapher and scholar, active 1969–1974.
Life and work
- 1969–1970Studied from photographs the fragmentary Phoenician Red Slip bowl with a long incised Phoenician inscription, found in 1969 in a pit of the first period of the Kition (Kathari) Astarte temple (dated c. 800 BC, 'end of the ninth century' in Karageorghis 1976), and gave a preliminary commentary before the Académie des Inscriptions in Paris. His reading: a citizen of Tamassos (ML) offered his shaved hair to Astarte; Karageorghis (1969 Chronique) and later (1976) used it to identify the temple as one of Astarte.
- 1969–1971Reported on Kition inscriptions in his EPHE annual reports: 'Les comptes du temple de Kition' (1969-70, pp. 153-159), 'La plus ancienne inscription phénicienne de Chypre' (1969-70, pp. 152-153) and 'Trois inscriptions phéniciennes de Kition' (1970-71, pp. 155-160), as listed in Sznycer's obituary bibliography.
