Adrien Santi Mattei

fl. 1862–1915

Collector and landowner, active 1862–1915. Lived at Larnaca.

Life and work

  1. February 1862
Edmond Duthoit saw, in a house in Larnaca belonging to 'M. Mattei Sancti', a bronze statue thigh of exquisite finish, two or three times life-size, from a statue found about 27 years earlier by Turks digging for stone and broken up into pieces (Duthoit's letter of 8 February 1862). Merrillees argues this is probably the Tamassos Apollo leg now in the Louvre (the Chatsworth head belongs to the same statue).

  2. 1878
A glass cylindrical vessel with Greek inscription belonging to 'M. Mattei, de Larnaca' (recorded by Pottier in Cyprus, August-November 1878) was bought by Alexander Palma di Cesnola; which Mattei is meant is not clear.

  3. 1884
The Louvre bronze leg was 'given by one of the Mattei clan' (Merrillees; De Ridder's catalogue: 'Chypre, don M. Mattei'). Cassimatis, citing the Louvre archives, says it was the last gift of Péretié, handed over by his son, and comes from Saida.
