John C. Overbeck

American archaeologist and scholar, active 1970–1972. Worked at Idalion, Dhali-Kafkallia and Ayios Sozomenos. Worked with Paul W. Lapp; wrote with Stuart Swiny.

Life and work

    An American group directed by Paul Lapp (Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) and John Overbeck (SUNY Albany) had planned to begin excavation at Idalion in spring 1970. After Lapp's accidental death, work was limited to mapping the city site and surface reconnaissance over a wider area; Overbeck reported it at the 1970 AIA General Meeting (AJA 75, 1971, 210). Among pottery found was a Mycenaean Rude Style pictorial krater.

    Cadastral survey of Idalion by Overbeck of SUNY Albany (unpublished MS), on which the 1971 sample excavation areas were chosen by the American Expedition to Idalion; 1972 areas were chosen on the basis of the intensive surface survey and coring programme.

    Davis's chart lists Idalion 1970-1978 under 'Paul Lapp, John Overbeck/SUNY-Albany' among the excavators and sponsors (the later seasons were run by G. E. Wright, L. Stager, A. M. Walker and others, listed in the same row). Overbeck's own recorded part is the 1970 work.

    With S. Swiny published Two Cypriot Bronze Age Sites at Kafkallia (Dhali), SIMA 33, Goteborg (31 pp., 55 figs.). Gaber cites pp. 7-31 of it as the work of earlier archaeologists who searched the plateau above the Ayios Sozomenos tombs for the settlement associated with them.
