Marion, finds from tombs 31–45

225 object photographs

Sites: Marion, Korovia-Nitovikla

This series holds 225 object photographs of finds from Tombs 31–45 at Marion, the city-kingdom on the plain of Polis tis Chrysochou where Erik Sjöqvist excavated 98 tombs for the Swedish Cyprus Expedition between March and July 1929. All fifteen tombs belong to the western necropolis at Kaparka, a plateau on the western outskirts of Polis whose soft alluvial rock was poorly suited to rock-cut tombs; most chambers were found fallen in.

These are Cypro-Classical burials, several with more than one burial phase. Tomb 43, with about forty photographs, Tomb 34 and Tomb 44 are the best represented. Alongside Bichrome Red, Black-on-Red, Red Slip and Plain White pottery and black-glazed ware, the photographs show the metal and small finds of these tombs: iron weapons and tools, bronze toilet articles, gold rings and pendants from Tomb 34, the objects of iron, bronze and silver from Tomb 41, and a terracotta statuette and alabaster from Tomb 36. Many prints were filed in the museum's folder for Tombs 31–60, and pieces from that folder with no tomb recorded are in a separate series. The tombs are published in SCE II; see Tomb 34, Tomb 43 and the excavation.
