Reinhold von Lichtenberg

Reinhold Freiherr von Lichtenberg

1865–1927 · Austria

Art historian who visited Cyprus in 1902, wrote on its earliest history and on British rule, and was reportedly invited in 1909 to write new Cyprus Museum catalogues that never appeared.

Biography

In 1909 the Cyprus Museum Committee is reported to have invited Reinhold Freiherr von Lichtenberg to write two catalogues of its collection, and nothing came of it. He was born in 1865 and died in 1927. He studied art history, archaeology and Sanskrit at Vienna and Leipzig and took his doctorate in 18921.

He went to Cyprus in 1902 and wrote a critical piece on British rule, published in Die Grenzboten in 19041,4. Merrillees says he is said to have taken leave from his post at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic in 1905 for visits to Crete, Egypt and Cyprus, and to have retired in 1908 as a private researcher1. His "Beiträge zur ältesten Geschichte von Kypros" appeared in 1906; Merrillees describes it as second-hand and heavily dependent on German sources1,3. A second critical piece on British rule followed in 19156. Magda Ohnefalsch-Richter thanked him for help with illustrations1.

In his confidential report of 1909 on the Cyprus Museum, Wilfrid Jerome Farrell wrote that the Museum Committee had invited "the Freiherr von Lichtenberg" to prepare one catalogue for visitors and one scientific catalogue to replace Myres's. Merrillees records that nothing ever came of it1.
