Joseph Chamberlain
fl. 1902 · United Kingdom
British colonial official, active in 1902.
Life and work
- 1902Reported in a 1902 parliamentary exchange (after Lord Balcarres on 26 May 1902 hoped Cyprus antiquities would be kept on the island) as saying the Colonial Office had often urged the Cypriots to preserve their antiquities but they had failed to accept any suggestion, so that curiosities were in greater danger of being lost than if shipped to Europe; stated that a grant for a Museum had been authorised and a new law introduced to let the authorities purchase all antiquities found, where previously they could take only one third.

- 1902A Memorial to Chamberlain from the Cypriote Greeks answered the reproach, claiming he had done them an injustice by saying they took no interest in their antiquities, and asserting that the antiquities had for them 'the additional value of being objects of adoration'.
