Traveller / antiquarian
Franz von Löher
fl. 1875–1889 · Germany
Bavarian writer and traveller, active 1875–1889.
Life and work
- 21 April 1875Staying at Larnaca from 21 April 1875 he visited the consul (Cesnola) and his collection and found him assembling the fragments of the Amathus sarcophagus (reported in Cypern, 1878); Masson uses this as impartial dating of the sarcophagus discovery to early 1875.
- 1878Published Cypern. Reiseberichte uber Natur und Landschaft, Volk und Geschichte (Stuttgart 1878; 3rd ed. 1879/1880 with a preface fixing the year of travel). Cobham also lists 'Kaiser Friedrich II. Kampf um Cypern' (Munich 1878).
- 1878Recorded that at Kouklia a tower on the highest hill was dug round and a side quarried away for treasure; Maier takes this as the Koukliotes quarrying the palatial building on Hadji Abdullah (Site KB).
- 1878Alleged (from local accounts) that the French deliberately destroyed the second Amathus stone vase in 1865; Fivel and Masson note the story was quickly refuted (Perrot).
- 1889Hogarth remarks that Von Loher never went to the Karpas and cannot be reckoned an archaeological traveller.
