Conservator who directed Dumbarton Oaks's cleaning of Byzantine wall paintings in Cypriot churches at Asinou, Lagoudera and Monagri from 1965 and later co-published the Lagoudera paintings.

Biography

David Winfield directed the Dumbarton Oaks conservation of medieval church paintings in Cyprus from 1965, work done under the Department of Antiquities' permission on painted churches that stayed in place. At Asinou, with Ernest Hawkins, he cleaned the frescoes of Panayia Phorviotissa in April and November 1965 with funds from Harvard's administrative committee1. Hawkins and Winfield led the third and last campaign there in 1967, which showed the paintings of 1106 to resemble those of Ayios Chrysostomos and Trikomo2.

In April 1968 the Dumbarton Oaks team under his direction began on the paintings of Panayia tou Arakou at Lagoudera, a church dated by inscription to 11923. Work continued through 1969, when the twelve prophets in the drum were finished, and into 1970 and 19724,7,8. From August 1969, at the Department's request, he also directed urgent re-fixing of the vault paintings of a church at Monagri in the Limassol district4.

He published Asinou, A Guide in 196911, a first preliminary report on Lagoudera in Dumbarton Oaks Papers12 and a report on Monagri, Lagoudera and Hagios Neophytos13. With June Winfield, who analysed the images and made the drawings, he published The Church of the Panaghia tou Arakos at Lagoudhera, Cyprus in 20039,14. His dates of birth and death are not recorded.
