Christina Ioannou

fl. 2011–2024 · Cyprus

University of Cyprus historian-archaeologist of Archaic Cyprus who co-organised the 2015 Nicosia conference on Salamis and co-edited its 2019 proceedings.

Biography

Christina Ioannou, of the University of Cyprus, helped organise the 2015 Nicosia conference marking fifty years of French-Cypriot excavation at Salamis. The idea arose in spring 2014 in discussion with Vassos Karageorghis, who proposed Salamis and the French-Cypriot work there, begun in 1964. The conference ran on 21-23 May 20151. Yon thanks the University of Cyprus, Theodoros Mavrojannis and Ioannou for organising it with the Department of Antiquities3. The proceedings, Salamis of Cyprus, were published by Waxmann in 2019 and edited with Sabine Rogge1.

Her own chapter in that volume treats the royal tombs of Salamis in the mythic and historical frame of the city's rise after Enkomi, and the Phoenician role, and ends by reading the tombs as reflecting an international economic network under Neo-Assyrian dominance. It is dedicated to Vassos and Jacqueline Karageorghis8.

Earlier work includes an article on Kition and the Near East in Archaic written sources4, "D'Aphrodite à Astarté Paphia"5, and a chapter on the political situation in the Near East in the Cypro-Archaic period in Ancient Cyprus Today6. In 2024 she gave a talk on temple boys in Cypriot sculpture9.
