Carsten Niebuhr

fl. 1766 · Germany

Geometrician in Danish service, active in 1766. Worked at Larnaca. Worked with Ambarsun.

Life and work

  1. 1766
Visited Cyprus and went to the church of St Lazarus, Larnaca, to see inscriptions Swinton had thought possibly Phoenician; took the native Parisin as interpreter; copied the characters, took them to the consul Timothy Turner, who judged them Armenian, and had them read by the Armenian Ambarsun in Mariti's presence. Mariti does not recall whether he kept the copies.

  2. 1766
Drew a plan of the ruins between Salines and Larnaca, which Mariti, citing Niebuhr's Reisebeschreibung III, 22, accepts as ancient Citium.
