    Mariti reports that Mr Swinton had supposed, with some hesitation, certain inscriptions near the church of St Lazarus to be Phoenician; Niebuhr in 1766 went to see them and found them Armenian; Parisin the Maronite interpreter had also, Mariti believed, been Swinton's guide
