History
- c. 1865Mustafa Fefsi affair: Ottoman police at Larnaca seize the cavass of the US consul Cesnola. Cesnola travels to Constantinople and lays the case before the US Minister, E. J. Morris, who by Cesnola's account backs him, accepts a mixed commission under Augustus J. Johnson (US Consul-General at Beirut), and sends an ultimatum to the Porte while two US warships lie in Larnaca Bay. Satisfaction listed by Cesnola: dismissal of the Larnaca governor, restitution of Fefsi, a 21-gun salute, 10,000 piastres damages to the US dragoman, an apology from the Governor-General. Cesnola's account only; the year is not given on the pages read.
- 1865–1870Cesnola says that after surveying Dali he addressed himself to Minister Morris, who used his influence with the Porte and had the digging firman renewed each year while he remained at Constantinople.

- 1873–1875After Cesnola's return from the United States (1873) the Turks were more hostile and he had trouble obtaining a new firman. By his own letter he agreed with the American Minister Boker to give many duplicates to the Constantinople museum as a gift. The Porte instead sent Dr Dethier to Larnaca with a letter that made it a requisition; Cesnola refused, informed the Legation, then let Dethier take 88 boxes. Boker, 'furious', confiscated the boxes at Constantinople and agreed to return them only against an official letter of gratitude from the Porte and a renewed firman. The letter came; the firman, Cesnola says, never did, and a 'Turkish solution' followed. Cesnola's version only.
