Consul / diplomat
J. P. Brown
fl. 1870–1871 · United States
American diplomat, active 1870–1871.
Life and work
- 1871According to Cesnola's letter (quoted by Marangou), the Grand Vizier wrote to Brown that, an imperial firman now ordering duplicate finds to be given to the Porte, the US Consul in Cyprus must send half his collection to Constantinople before exporting anything. Brown passed on the order and, per Cesnola, expressed regret that he could do nothing as rigorous orders had gone to the Governor of Cyprus. Cesnola, who had already shipped about 200 cases, called Brown 'a dirty individual' to represent the United States.
