The Cypriot collection

4 ceramics (Early Cypriot, Cypro-Archaic) and 2 terracottas, all lost as war losses in the Second World War (2012)

Recke 2012, p. 107

History

  1. 1911–1913
Siegfried Loeschcke, on commission from his father Georg, bought Cypriot pieces for the Berlin Winckelmann-Institut in Smyrna (1911 and 1912) and Athens (1912/13); the Smyrna pieces came from the dealers Whitall and von Lennep. Recke notes that most purchases in Athens, Smyrna and Cairo were for university teaching collections.

  2. 12 November 1937
A draft or copy of a letter from Gerhart Rodenwaldt, then Professor of Classical Archaeology at the university, to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supported Porphyrios Dikaios of the Cyprus Museum for an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship; found in the Winckelmann-Institut archive. Schmid says the request seems to have been unsuccessful.
