White Painted Hydria

Description:

Large pottery hydria or water jar in White Painted ware; ovoid-biconical body on a low ring base; wide sinuous concave neck with a flaring rim; pair of opposing loop handles on the body (one broken) and two smaller ones higher up on the shoulder; buff-cream clay and slip, decorated in matt brown-black paint: parallel bands on the body and neck, group of three wavy lines between the handles, geometrical motifs on the shoulder (chevrons, hatched bands, filled triangle), larger handles are solid black, a ladder pattern on the smaller ones; surface worn in places, rim chipped.
