Ioannis Voskos

fl. 2008–2023

Athens-based scholar of prehistoric and Late Bronze Age Cyprus, co-author with A. Bernard Knapp of the 2008 paper rejecting a Mycenaean colonization of Cyprus.

Biography

Ioannis Voskos is co-author, with A. Bernard Knapp, of "Cyprus at the End of the Late Bronze Age: Crisis and Colonization or Continuity and Hybridization?", published in the American Journal of Archaeology in 2008. It argues that newcomers to Cyprus around 1200 to 1000 BCE were neither colonists nor conquerors, and that Cypriot, Aegean and Levantine trends combined in a new elite identity1. The Origins of the Cypriotes summarises their view as holding that the "Mycenaean colonization" was neither Mycenaean nor colonization, though some people with an Aegean cultural background probably arrived between the late 13th and the 11th century7.

His later work concerns the Neolithic and Chalcolithic. With Eleni Mantzourani he edited the 2019 publication of the moveable finds from the Neolithic settlement of Kantou-Kouphovounos5. With Efrossini Vika he reexamined human remains from Kantou, Erimi-Pamboula and Sotira-Teppes2. In 2023 he was lead author of a paper on foodways in the Kouris valley and co-edited, with Dimitris Kloukinas and Mantzourani, Prehistoric Lifeways in Cyprus from the Early Holocene to the Middle Bronze Age3,4.

With A. B. Knapp, argues that the material culture of 12th-11th-century BCE Cyprus reflects an amalgamation of Cypriot, Aegean and Levantine trends and a new elite identity, and that the 'Mycenaean colonization' of Cyprus was neither Mycenaean nor colonization (the latter as summarised in The Origins of the Cypriotes, p. 24).
