Life and work

    Introduced by Guillaume-Rey to Sosthene Grasset, who had drawn Guillaume-Rey's attention to Cyprus's archaeological wealth; at her initiative Napoleon III charged Renan with the Phoenicia mission (the Vogue/Duthoit Cyprus work followed).

    Grasset asked, through Mme Cornu, for a mission to Cyprus aimed less at new discoveries than at preserving known monuments; she told him to go first to Vogue in Beirut. (Letter to Renan, 10 July 1861.)

    Grasset reports a letter from 'Madame C.' saying she had taken up his affair and asking him to buy Bellapais for a friend of her husband; his photographs, including the (Athienou) statue, had been shown to that friend. Bonato's note 118 reads 'Madame Cornu ?', i.e. tentative.
