Alice Kingsnorth

fl. 1977–2004

Archaeologist who directed the 1979 excavation of the Chalcolithic site of Kalavasos-Ayious in the Vasilikos Valley and wrote the Ayious section of its 1982 preliminary report.

Biography

Alice Kingsnorth directed the summer 1979 excavation at Kalavasos-Ayious, a Chalcolithic site in the Vasilikos Valley, before the new Nicosia-Limassol road was built through it. She joined Ian A. Todd's Vasilikos Valley Project in 1977, when she appears on the field staff for the July to September season with Larissa Hordynsky and Paul Croft, and began work on the project's chipped-stone material in 19781,2. Todd's contributors' note of 1982 gives her a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.A. from the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, with a thesis on the Neolithic architecture of Cyprus. It adds that she had worked on excavations in California and at Ayios Epiktitos-Vrysi, and that she taught archaeology and anthropology at a community college in Sacramento2.

Soundings at Ayious in autumn 1978 led to a full excavation in 1979. It ran from 5 July to 15 September, opened about 1,000 square metres in four areas, and resumed on 8 November 1979, continuing at intervals to 18 January 1980 when the road's right of way was widened2. Kingsnorth wrote the Ayious report in Todd's Fourth Preliminary Report in the Journal of Field Archaeology, including the section on the artifacts; Todd wrote the part on the north-west area. The report says that Hordynsky and Kingsnorth were to analyse the lithics in full2.

Her name appears with Todd and Croft on two chapters of the final Ayious volume, Vasilikos Valley Project 8 (SIMA 71:8, 2004)7.
