Hala Sultan Tekke: Giessen University with the Free University of Brussels (2011-)

From 2011 the University of Giessen dug at Hala Sultan Tekke in cooperation with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, to prepare the final publication of a building complex that Paul Åström of Göteborg University discovered in 1980 and partly exposed on a large scale¹. Matthias Recke was Field Director, and Karin Nys led the Brussels side of the cooperation^1,2. The Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen sponsored the work¹.

The aims were to clarify the building and architectural history of the area and to improve understanding of the urban system of Late Bronze Age cities on Cyprus¹. The excavations were run as teaching excavations, within which Recke, as Field Director, set and supervised several BA theses on Cypriot topics¹. Recke presents the Giessen work as the only German excavation then run on Cyprus¹. He wrote in 2012 that the cooperation was to continue beyond the publication work¹.
