The Cypriot collection
No total for Cypriot coins or seals found. Sources show a Gunther group of about 14 Byzantine lead seals (1952.196, plus 1952.142) and a substantial part of the Gunther Cyprus coin collection, which the Society passed to the Cyprus Museum in 1949-50. (2009)
History
- 1876Gaston Feuardent, the Paris dealer, was nominated for membership (nominated by Balmanno per the folder index) and later served as the Society's Historiographer.

- 1881Edward A. Bond, Principal Librarian of the British Museum, was asked about Feuardent's character (inquiry of 9 June 1881, noted in the ANS folder guide as a noted document); the ANS held Feuardent's published 'Answer' to Cesnola in the same year.

- 1 March 1884After the Feuardent-Cesnola libel trial the Society held a special meeting and unanimously passed resolutions supporting Feuardent. Marangou, citing Adelson, says two paragraphs criticising the Metropolitan Museum's treatment of antiquities were withdrawn from the text sent to the New York Times (published 6 March 1884).

- January 1885William J. Stillman, elected a resident member in January 1885, was asked by resolution (offered by Robert Hewitt, 20 January 1885) to examine the evidence on the provenance of the Cesnola Collection and report, with a proposed trip to Cyprus.

- 1885The Stillman report on the Cesnola Collection was privately printed (about 33 pages). Adelson, quoted by Marangou, calls it the Society's last broadside in Feuardent's defence and a full vindication of Feuardent; this is Adelson's judgment as quoted, and the trial jury had found for Cesnola.
- March 1949Christian G. Gunther gave one lead seal from his father's collection to the Society (accession 1952.142, recorded by Metcalf as the gift of March 1949).
- 1952The Charles G. Gunther bequest brought some 14 Byzantine lead seals from Cyprus to the Society (accession 1952.196). The better seals had been kept by the Cyprus Museum. Metcalf thinks some come from the Petrakides archive.
- 1959Dorothy H. Cox's Coins from the Excavations at Curium, 1932-1953 appeared as Numismatic Notes and Monographs 145, published by the Society (Kourion excavations of the University of Pennsylvania Museum).
