Review of V. Karageorghis, Ancient Art from Cyprus in the Collection of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides (Nicosia, 2002)
Classical Review
A review of four illustrated catalogues of Cypriot antiquities, including *Ancient Art from Cyprus in the Collection of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides* (Karageorghis 2002), on their holdings and provenance.
The Pierides volume catalogues 442 objects of the Early Bronze through Medieval periods, prepared with K. Romiopoulou. The collection was donated to the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus in 1999, and much of it is displayed in the Museum of the George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection in Nicosia. Bolger turns also to the Royal Ontario Museum, whose sculpture comes largely from the sanctuary of Apollo at Tamassos-Frangissa near Nicosia, and to the Medelhavsmuseet, formed largely from Swedish Cyprus Expedition excavations. She states that most of the material in the volumes lacks provenance, apart from the Medelhavsmuseet collection.
