William Bevan

fl. 1904–1926 · United Kingdom

Director of Agriculture, Cyprus, active 1904–1926. Sold to Henry Crowther; worked with E. M. Jelajian.

Life and work

  1. 1924–1925
Coordinated Cyprus's pavilion at Wembley. The Government supplied 'pottery, ancient and modern, minor statuary' as decoration, apparently not for sale; in 1925 a private exhibitor, E. M. Jelajian, sold ancient pottery there.

  2. December 1925
The Colonial Commissioner for Cyprus offered Leeds 'Cyprus ancient pottery and other objects'; deferred February 1926, refused March 1926, then accepted by June 1926: 103 examples of Cypriot pottery and bronzes for 200 pounds (20% of the museum's annual collections budget). Reeve infers that Bevan handled the disposal of the Government exhibits, placing objects with museums by gift or sale, and that the objects were probably Cyprus Museum 'duplicates'.
