Stefanos Sinos
fl. 1970–1990 · Greece
Athens Polytechnic professor who directed the partial restoration of the Temple of Apollo Hylates at Kourion in 1983-86 and published the temple in 1990.
Biography
Stefanos Sinos, a professor at the Athens Polytechnic, directed the partial restoration of the Temple of Apollo Hylates at Kourion in the 1980s. The Department of Antiquities, then under Vassos Karageorghis, invited him to make a fresh study of the temple with a view to restoration, after the University of Missouri work at the sanctuary of the late 1970s2. Karageorghis recorded that the task was assigned to Sinos and financed by the A. G. Leventis Foundation3. Earlier, the Cyprus report for 1976-80 mentions a mission from the Athens Polytechnic under a Prof. St. Sinos that studied houses of folk architecture in a number of villages7.
The first phase, in 1983, was supervised by Sinos and F. Wenzel of Karlsruhe, and included a sounding under the stairway of the temple4. In 1984 the podium was restored on its south and west sides, two columns were added on the west to support surviving parts of the pediment, and the west wall was raised to one third of its original height5. The work was reported complete in 19866. Sinos's investigations clarified the plan of the earlier Hellenistic temple, and part of the facade, with two pillars carrying Nabataean capitals, was restored3.
In 1990 the Leventis Foundation published The Temple of Apollo Hylates at Kourion and the Restoration of its South-West Corner, by Sinos with Wenzel, E. Kalliri and M. Ieronymidou. Kalliri made the drawings and Ieronymidou reported the finds from Sinos's test excavations. In his review, Hector W. Catling says the book argues, against David Soren, for two successive temples at the site2. His dates of birth and death are not recorded.

- 1990Published The Temple of Apollo Hylates at Kourion and the Restoration of its South-West Corner (A. G. Leventis Foundation, Athens), with F. Wenzel (structural measures), E. Kalliri (architectural drawings, plans, reconstructions) and M. Ieronymidou (finds from his test excavations); Greek text translated by Dr David Hardy. Catling says S. departs from Soren's dating, arguing for two successive temples, the earlier late Classical-early Hellenistic (Ptolemy I Soter), the Roman rebuilding after the AD 76 earthquake (S. suggests AD 77-117).
