Philippe Trélat

fl. 2011–2019

Historian of medieval and Ottoman Cyprus who wrote on Nicosia's markets, on Cypriot luxury objects exported west and on George Jeffery's diaries.

Biography

Philippe Trélat published on Cyprus in the Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes, mostly on the medieval and Ottoman island. In volume 41 (2011) he and Hesperia Iliadou traced Nicosia's market places from the Lusignan and Venetian periods (1192-1571) through the Ottoman period (1571-1878), using documents and traveller accounts1. In the same volume he reviewed Despina Pilides's two-volume edition of the diaries of George Jeffery, Curator of Ancient Monuments, summarising Jeffery's work on the Famagusta fortifications, Kolossi and Bellapais and his supervision of the Cyprus Museum building from 1907 to 1918, and questioning some identifications on her plan of Nicosia3.

His article in volume 43 (2013), "Le goût pour Chypre", dealt with Cypriot art objects and precious fabrics exported to the West between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries2. His dates and institution are not recorded, and he is not known to have excavated or collected.
