Gilles Grivaud
fl. 1981–2014 · France
Historian of medieval and Venetian Cyprus who published Leonardo Donà's 1557 notes on the Soloi sarcophagus find and a gazetteer of the island's deserted villages.
Biography
Gilles Grivaud is a historian of medieval and Venetian Cyprus10. In 1986 he published in the Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes an article on the Venetian Leonardo Donà, whose notes of 1556-57 record ancient sites and an organised dig1. Grivaud reports from them that Hieronimo Attar found a marble sarcophagus with fighting women on unbridled horses at Soloi in 1557. He describes this as an individual initiative and not a Venetian archaeological policy, and sets it beside Gian Matteo Bembo's excavations at Famagusta in 1546-481.
His Villages désertés à Chypre (1998) is a gazetteer of abandoned settlements, cited by later archaeological projects for medieval settlement history6,7. With Francesca Cavazzana Romanelli he published the 1542 map of Cyprus by Leonida Attar in 20063.
