Louis Auguste Dozon

1822–1890 · France

French consul in Cyprus from 1878 to 1881 who drew the first accurate plan of Larnaca and collected antiquities, some given to the Louvre and to Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Biography

Auguste Dozon drew the plan of Larnaca printed in the first volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Semiticarum in 1881, which Jeffery called the first regular accurate survey of the town and which also gives the outline of ancient Kition3,4. He was born at Châlons-en-Champagne in 1822 and died at Versailles in 1890 or 1891, and was also a Slavist and philologist5. He was French consul in Cyprus from 1878 to 18811,2.

Caubet counts him among the diplomats who continued to collect antiquities after the British takeover, and writes that he gave his finds to the Louvre (among them AM 2793) and to the museum at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 18911. Caubet's date for the gift is later than the death date of 31 December 1890 that Wikidata gives (1891 in the German national library's record), so it may have been made by his heirs.

Marangou prints an undated letter, first published by N. E. Kyriazis, addressed to "the French Consul Dozon" by a dealer named Remize of Algiers. Remize proposed that Dozon or a young agent buy antiquities and other objects in Cyprus and send them to Algiers, where Remize would repair and sell them, advance half the cost and share the profits, with the arrangement kept secret; he also urged excavation near Paphos2. No reply from Dozon is known.
