George Ioannou

d. 2004 · Cyprus

Cypriot antiquities official and excavator. Excavated at Palaepaphos-Skales. Worked for Department of Antiquities, Cyprus; worked with Andreas Georghiou and Elizabeth Catling.

Life and work

  1. 1958–1959
As museum guard at Kouklia he helped Hector Catling and Elizabeth Catling record the British Expedition (1951-54) tomb groups kept in the local museum, when Catling was a Temporary Officer in the Department of Antiquities and Terence Mitford had invited him to publish the tombs.

  2. January 1979
After agricultural levelling at Skales, southeast of Kouklia, exposed and partly destroyed tombs (T. 42-57) before the Department was told, the local Custodian was asked to remove the objects and take them to the Kouklia Museum; no record, plan or photograph was made in situ, so Karageorghis's account of those tombs depends entirely on his recollection ('an experienced excavator').

  3. 1979–1983
Took part in the Skales emergency excavation directed by Karageorghis as one of the 'expert diggers', with foreman Andreas Georghiou, draughtsman Chrysilios Polykarpou and retired technical assistant Symeon Klonaris. Field-owner: Philip Papageorghiou of Paphos.
