- 1871Masson lists 'un numismate qui est le général Fox' among buyers at the Sotheby sales of Cesnola's antiquities in London (9 Jan and 1 May 1871), distinct from Colonel Fox (the future Pitt Rivers).

- by 1878Lang bought a gold coin of the Evagorean dynasty for GBP 4 10s and wrote that 'General Fox at first sight gave me 80 pounds, and never ceased to thank me'; Lang adds it was unique. Date of the purchase is not given in the passage.
