Edward Perry Warren

fl. 1890–1908 · United States

American antiquities dealer through whom many objects reached the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; his Cypriot traces are a seal credited to E. P. Warren at the Ashmolean and a 1908 gift to Leipzig.

Biography

A blue chalcedony scaraboid with a Cypro-Syllabic inscription, dated Cypro-Archaic II to Cypro-Classical I, is in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford with the credit line "Presented by E. P. Warren, 1890s"3. The museum gives only the initials, which are presumably those of Edward Perry Warren.

In 1908 Warren and John Marshall gave the University of Leipzig a terracotta statuette of a kouros. Recke lists it among the university's Cypriot holdings and queries whether it came from Naukratis ("aus Naukratis?")1.

Buchholz calls Warren by far the better known antiquities dealer of his time in the United States, and says that many important objects reached the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston through him, among them over a hundred bronzes in the museum's 1971 bronze catalogue2. Buchholz also warns against confusing him with Colonel Falkland Warren, who dug in Cyprus. The 1911 index of the Jahrbuch des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts attributed the Boston Throne to the colonel, but it came to Boston through E. P. Warren, who bought it in Rome2.
