Berkeley classical archaeologist who organised the 1971-72 Antiquities of Cyprus exhibition and completed the 1974 catalogue of Cypriot antiquities in San Francisco Bay Area collections.

Biography

Darrell A. Amyx organised the 1971-72 exhibition of Cypriot antiquities from Bay Area collections and then finished the catalogue that Vassos Karageorghis's visit to Berkeley set in motion. Born in 1911, he took a Stanford BA in 1930 and a Berkeley MA in 1932 and PhD in 1937, joined the Berkeley faculty in 1946 and retired in 19782.

Vassos Karageorghis was Regent's Lecturer at Berkeley in the autumn of 1971. Amyx organised "Antiquities of Cyprus", drawn from five Pacific Coast collections, at the R. H. Lowie Museum of Anthropology (25 October 1971 to 3 January 1972) and then at the Stanford University Museum (10 January to 25 March 1972). He also gave a graduate seminar on ancient Cyprus. Karageorghis proposed publishing the better pieces in the Corpus of Cypriote Antiquities, and Paul Åström, editor of the series Studies in Mediterranean Archaeology, agreed. Six students from the seminar are named as co-authors; Ellen Herscher completed the bibliography and edited the text. Amyx took responsibility for finishing the catalogue and Karageorghis added final research and editing1.

Cypriote Antiquities in San Francisco Bay Area Collections (1974) covers the Lowie Museum, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum; Stanford is left out because it had its own publications. The introduction records that the Lowie's Cypriot objects were all given by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, and that some were bought at the Hôtel Drouot in March 1901, at the sale of the collection of "M. Boissé", formerly French Consul General at Larnaca. The Legion of Honor pieces were given by Alma de Bretteville Spreckels Awl, with one exception1. Amyx died in 19972.
