Carlo Gallavotti

fl. 1970–1977 · Italy

Director of the Rome institute for Mycenaean and Aegean-Anatolian studies who headed the Italian excavation at Ayia Irini-Palaeokastro in 1970 to 1972.

Biography

Carlo Gallavotti directed the Italian mission at Ayia Irini-Palaeokastro, in the Kyrenia district, for its first three seasons from 1970 to 1972. The Bulletin de correspondance hellénique introduces him as Professor C. Gallavotti, director of the Istituto per gli Studi Micenei ed Egeo-Anatolici in Rome, and prints his report on the first season: three sectors, the town on the Palaeokastro hill, a sector to its west, and the necropolis by the sea1. Nicolaou, who prints his name as "Callavotti", records Hellenistic and Graeco-Roman houses and a tomb of the 16th century BC with Aegean cups, and states the aim of the dig as an enquiry into relations between Cyprus and the Minoan-Mycenaean world4.

The second campaign, in 1971, was long, with reports from three field directors: P. E. Pecorella, the Quilici team and L. Rocchetti2. The third season in 1972 was run "under the direction of M. Carlo Gallavotti" with the same three; it produced 25 Archaic tombs, tombs at Kharangas and a large Hellenistic and Roman quarter with baths3,5. In 1973 the fourth season is reported under Giovanni Rizza for the same institute6. Robertson in 1975 listed the site among the Late Bronze Age excavations then active "under Professor Gallavotti"10.

Life and work

  1. 1970
First season of the Italian mission at Ayia Irini-Palaeokastro by the sea: three sectors (the town on the hill, a sector to its west, and the necropolis). The aim stated by Nicolaou was to investigate relations between Cyprus and the Minoan-Mycenaean world. Finds included Hellenistic and Graeco-Roman houses with querns, lamps and glass, and a 16th-century BC tomb with vases, bronzes, cylinder seals and two Aegean cups (one with a double-axe symbol, possibly LH II). Gallavotti supplied the BCH report himself.

  2. 1971
Second season, 'a very long campaign' in three places: the seaside necropolis at Palaeokastro (Pecorella: fifteen tombs, fourteen already looted, one intact; LC I and late Geometric to Archaic), the settlement (Quilici), and the Kharangas tombs (Rocchetti, five Geometric tombs).
