Antonio Mattei

fl. 1862–1866 · Ottoman

Dragoman and bookkeeper to two French missions in Cyprus, in 1862 and 1865-66, whose invoices record the work at the Amathus vase and who sent cases of antiquities to France with Paul Tardieu.

Biography

In 1862 Edmond Duthoit described the members of his household as including "un drogman (M. Mattei qui fait la comptabilité)", whom he called his majordome1. The accounts of the de Vogüé mission list "Honoraires de M. Mattei Drogman comptable, 600 F"2. At Athienou, Mattei negotiated with the villagers over the removal of capitals and lions2. Duthoit complained that Mattei spoke Greek "trop bien ou plutôt trop longuement", and wrote elsewhere that "M. Mattei est honnête plus que tout ce monde là"2. In his 1865 journal he wrote that "Comme tous les Grecs, Mattei cherche à m'extorquer le plus de piastres possibles"1.

Duthoit returned in 1865 and toured the island from 31 May to 10 July with "Antoine Mattei" as dragoman, engaging Mattei's son Clementin, aged 24, as a second one1. Mattei's autograph invoices, which the editors cite from the Duthoit family papers, record plaster and boxes for squeezes of the Amathus vase at Palaio Limassol in June 1865, the demolition and rebuilding of its shelter, the carriage of the Athienou statues on 21 July 1865 for 138 piastres, and the crating of three statues in August1. The vase left on the corvette La Perdrix on 30 October 18651. A note by Masson on a statue bought through Paul Tardieu and sold to Duthoit for 500 piastres mentions photographs "prises par Mattei"1.

On 17 July 1866 Tardieu wrote that he and Mattei were sending 11 cases, 8 barrels and 3 monoliths1. Nothing further is recorded of Mattei.
