The Cypriot collection
A collection covering virtually all periods of Cypriot archaeology, rich in Early/Middle Bronze Age and Cypro-Archaic pottery and mostly unpublished before 2001. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a separate institution, holds the large limestone sculpture. (2002)
History
- 1824–1914Earlier gifts and purchases (two Base Ring jugs given by von Dumreicher in 1824, 38 pieces from A. J. Polack in 1872-73, the Hoffmann, Barre, Greau and van Branteghem collections in 1878-92, Lindos finds from the Danish Expedition to Rhodes 1902-14) are listed in the site's own article, which cites Karageorghis et al. 2001.
- 1887Marion finds from Ohnefalsch-Richter's digging, sold through the Paris auction of May 1887 (dealer Henri Hoffmann); the museum's three figure-on-shoulder jugs are inv. 3213-3215.
- 1924Blinkenberg and Friis Johansen's Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum fascicle for the museum publishes part of its Early/Middle Bronze Age and Cypro-Archaic pottery.
- 1924The museum buys an inscribed amphora and nine inscribed sherds from the Kafizin nymph sanctuary (Inv. 8364-8372). Mitford infers they were dug by Michael Kattis and smuggled after the First World War by a Lefkara lace merchant; Friis Johansen published them in 1953.
- 1953Friis Johansen publishes the Kafizin inscribed pottery in Copenhagen.
- 1998Karageorghis, visiting in autumn 1998, finds the museum's Cypriot collections mostly unpublished, and plans a catalogue of the Cypriot art in the museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, with a new gallery planned in the National Museum.
- 2001Karageorghis et al., Ancient Cypriote Art in Copenhagen, covering the National Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, published by the Leventis Foundation; Sørensen publishes the Lindos terracottas and limestone statuettes in it.
- 31 May 2002Prince Henrik of Denmark inaugurates the A. G. Leventis Foundation Gallery of Cypriote Antiquities, the fourth such gallery in a foreign museum after the British Museum, Fitzwilliam and Metropolitan. The museum devotes an issue of its magazine NYT to the collection, with an English version, Cyprus, the Island of Aphrodite.
