History

  1. 1877–1897
Castan's collection of vases, terracottas and sculpture is sold to the Musée Académique in instalments; after his death his widow Andromaque completes the transactions. Mostly from the areas of Amathus and Kourion. Castan said he had much of it from Cesnola.

  2. 1884
Terracotta Ionian kore (cat. 179), from Gosse, 'possibly from Paphos'.

  3. 1907
    G. Nicole writes that several hundred vases and terracottas entered the museum via Castan-Bey, who claimed to hold them from Cesnola; the promised description was never published.

  5. 1923
Heads cat. 197 (crowned youth, early 5th c. BC) and 202 (large veiled head, said to be from Sidon) bought from Dufour; Hermary suggests no. 197 may come from the Amrit sanctuary, the date matching the second looting of its favissa.

  6. 1959
Large bearded crowned head (cat. 199, third quarter of the 5th c. BC) acquired; Hermary attributes it to the workshop of a Louvre head from the Cesnola collection.

  7. 1990–2004
Chamay and Maier catalogue the stone sculpture (including Apollo Hylates sculptures, 1991).
