    Renan wrote to Melchior de Vogüé that he had seen Admiral Laroncière about the Amathus vase and reported his view that the ship Bucéphale could not lift its 8 tonnes; the admiral proposed chartering a local barque to bring it to Toulon, towing if necessary.
