History

  1. 1989–1991
    Three seasons of survey and excavation near the two chapels of Ayios Kononos on the Akamas peninsula under Hans Erik Mathiesen and Jane Fejfer, studying a small community in a marginal area in the Roman and Early Byzantine periods. Finds: a Late Roman house (villa rustica, 4th c., dated by a coin of Constans), slag, a three-aisled basilica (late 6th c.), Byzantine houses abandoned in the 7th-8th c.

    Survey of about 15 sq km around Ayios Kononos directed by Peter Hayes: more than 200 rock-cut tombs (mostly Hellenistic and Roman), at least three mid-to-late Chalcolithic settlements, some Archaic pottery, dense Late Roman-Middle Byzantine settlement.

    Study of ancient road systems of NW Cyprus: a well-engineered road linking the western Akamas, Cape Yeronisos and Cape Lara with the Cape Drepanon area, probably Roman or Early Byzantine. The survey is attributed to Tonnes Bekker-Nielsen and others.
