Tønnes Bekker-Nielsen

fl. 1989–2017 · Denmark

Danish scholar and archaeologist, active 1989–2017. Worked at Western Akamas (Paphos district). Wrote with N. Hannestad.

Life and work

  1. 1991
With N. Hannestad and M. Jensen published a preliminary report on an ancient road on the west coast of Cyprus (RDAC 1991, 203-10); Herscher (1995) reports that a survey by Bekker-Nielsen and others traced a well-engineered Roman or Early Byzantine north-south coastal road from the western Akamas via Cape Yeronisos and Cape Lara to the Cape Drepanon area, and that limited tests at three minor sites suggested numerous farmsteads, probably founded in the sixth century.

  2. 2000
Argued in 'The Foundation of Nea Paphos' (PDIA 3, 195-207) that the traditional c. 320 BCE date and Nikokles as founder conflict with the evidence, and that a foundation in or soon after 294 under Ptolemy I Soter is more straightforward (as quoted by the Salamis volume, which prefers Mitford's c. 320 view).

  3. 2004
Published The Roads of Ancient Cyprus (Copenhagen), cited for the Nea Paphos to Marion/Arsinoe to Soloi road and Roman milestones.
