The project
At Politiko, the village on the site of ancient Tamassos, the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus recorded tombs and chance finds in 1962 to 1967 and again in 1972. Many came to light during levelling work.1,2,3,4
The work began in 1962 with two Cypro-Archaic I chamber tombs.1 In 1963 a looted chimney-type tomb near the southwest edge of the village showed two burial episodes, the later one last used at the beginning of Late Cypriot IA, according to the annual report.5 In 1965 Vassos Karageorghis excavated a Late Cypriot II pit tomb found during Antiquities Service reconstruction work in the courtyard of the monastery of Saint-Herakleidios. It held local Base Ring II and White Slip II pottery, Mycenaean vessels, bronze daggers and tools, and two cylinders; the material is in the Cyprus Museum, inv. 1965/111–26/1, registered as Politiko Tomb 6.6 A looted Roman rock-cut tomb in the village that year had a main chamber and three side chambers with stone sarcophagi; its finds are held by the Archaeological Exploration Section as CS 1499.6
In 1966 M. Loulloupis and A. Christodoulou were credited with Tombs 8 and 9 at Koufos, about 1 km north of the village. Tomb 8 contained material from Cypro-Geometric III to Cypro-Archaic II, and Tomb 9 was assigned to Cypro-Archaic I-II. The Cyprus Survey material is kept in the premises of the Section of Archaeological Exploration.3 A limestone stele from Koufos, 1.60 m high, shows banqueting men beneath reclining lions and a young archer; a bulldozer badly damaged it (inv. 1966/V-25/1).3 The next year brought Middle to Late Bronze Age tombs at Pera Litharkes and the remains of a probable early Christian basilica at Chomazourka.4 In 1972 levelling at the Ayios Mnason cemetery exposed a late Cypro-Archaic II tomb, and the cemetery produced a 52 cm stele fragment of a crowned youth in high relief.2
