Politiko: Department of Antiquities excavation of plot 487
2012 · Tamassos
The Department of Antiquities excavation of plot 487 in central Politiko from 2012, which exposed a Christian complex with mosaics and an opus sectile floor, in use from the fifth century to at least the mid-seventh.
The project
From 2012 Frini Hadjichristophi supervised the Department of Antiquities excavation of plot 487 in the centre of Politiko, at Tamassos1. Three campaigns had exposed a complex of unidentified function, its core long narrow spaces around a rectangular room, preceded on the east by an atrium with four porticoes, two of them uncovered; a passage led south to rooms on a slope that she suggests may have been a service area1. She holds that the complex was not a church but certainly Christian: crosses or christograms were engraved on clay floor slabs and appear on roof tiles, window frames and pottery1. The central room had a partly preserved opus sectile pavement and the surrounding spaces geometric mosaics, and the complex seems to have been used without interruption from the fifth century to at least the middle of the seventh1. Her account appears in Church Building in Cyprus (Fourth to Seventh Centuries)1.
