The project
In 1988–89 Maria Hadjicosti supervised Department of Antiquities excavations of fifteen tombs found during construction work in three plots in the western part of the Ayia Paraskevi cemetery1. By the time the Department was notified, most were extensively looted and partly damaged by bulldozers; Hadjicosti reported that the disturbance prevented recovery of stratigraphic information1. Tombs 6 to 10 lay in plots 708–709, Tombs 11 to 14 in plot 1216 and Tombs 15 to 20 in plot 713; the finds were mainly Red Polished pottery, with imported Mycenaean and eastern pottery, spindle whorls, beads, bronze tools and weapons, lamps and coins1. In Tombs 11 and 12, excavated in January 1989, fragments of two White Painted vessels carried white and blue faience beads inlaid among painted lines; Hadjicosti tentatively assigned them to White Painted III–V String-hole Style of MC II–MC III1. She reported use of the cemetery from the Early Bronze Age into the Late Bronze Age1, and published a preliminary note in 19921.
