The project
In summer 2017 Kathryn Grossman, Tate Paulette, Lisa Graham and Andrew McCarthy surveyed two prehistoric sites in western Cyprus1. At Makounta-Voules-Mersinoudia, under a permit from the Department of Antiquities, they collected 31,762 sherds, 1,833 of them diagnostic, most of the diagnostic prehistoric sherds being Chalcolithic, all the datable ones Late Chalcolithic, with some Early and Middle Cypriot material, and recorded 91 ground-stone tools and 51 pieces of metal slag1. The authors say the slag may indicate metallurgical activity but that in-situ evidence is still needed1. At Stroumpi-Pigi-Agios Andronikos, surveyed at the Department's request, 73 of 75 prehistoric sherds were Chalcolithic, and magnetometry found a highly localized anomaly near them, which the authors thought suggested intact subsurface remains1. In a study season in the fall Graham, the project ceramicist, made a preliminary analysis of the Makounta pottery1. The authors describe the survey as a first step toward a longer-term excavation program1; their report was published in 20201.
