Episkopi-Pampoula: Department salvage excavations, 2009
2009 · Episkopi-Bamboula
The Department of Antiquities' 2009 trial excavations at Episkopi-Pampoula under Efthymia Alphas, which opened two unlooted rock-cut tombs, 66 and 71, and test trenches on Pampoula hill.
The project
In 2009 the Department of Antiquities held trial excavations in three plots at Episkopi-Pampoula, under the Archaeological Officer Efthymia Alphas1. In one plot two unlooted rock-cut tombs were excavated. Tomb 66 held 46 objects dated to the Cypro-Archaic period, many pottery sherds and very few skeletal fragments; Tomb 71 held the remains of at least 27 individuals, 116 objects and many sherds1. The rest of that plot contained looted tombs, numerous rectangular and square cuttings in the bedrock, and fragmentary Late Bronze Age remains, including a gaming stone1. Test trenches in another part of Pampoula hill exposed architectural remains and pottery dated from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman period1.
