Episkopi-Bamboula: the British Museum tombs of 1895
1895 · Episkopi-Bamboula
The British Museum's tomb excavation at Episkopi-Bamboula in 1895, whose Mycenaean pottery from the Site D tomb groups is now in London and Nicosia.
The project
In 1895 the British Museum excavated tombs at Episkopi-Bamboula, as part of its Turner Bequest excavations in Cyprus. Papadopoulos associates the Kourion Site D tomb groups with this late nineteenth-century excavation1. He describes procedural and recording difficulties in the work and says the recovered objects were divided between parties, which sent many of the most significant finds from the site overseas1. The Mycenaean pottery from the Site D tomb groups is held by the British Museum in London and by the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia1.
